First off I'd like to explain my perception of a 3 star hotel in Bangkok. It has to be clean, in great condition, have a pool and or gym. And most important of all the price should not cost more than 3000THB.
You might see that the hotels I recommend below are listed as 4 star properties elsewhere. Well I'm not so liberal and I guess my expectations are just a little higher. But regardless, these are really nice affordable hotels in Sukhumvit that are close to the Nana BTS station and especially to Nana and Soi Cowboy red light districts.
1. Bel Aire Princess Bangkok Hotel:
|Bel Aire Princess - Superior Double Room|
It's near a very busy section of Bangkok, just a 100 meters down Sukhumvit Soi 5 with many massage parlors, restaurants and other shops close by.
The Bel Aire's superior rooms are 32 square meters. So you'll have plenty of room for yourself and company. It has all the comforts you'll ever need and one of the better hotels near Nana Plaza.
One thing that I have to mention about the Bel Aire is to make sure when you check in at reception is to mention that the room is for 2 guests. Because the hotel has a strict 2 person per room occupancy room. And the hotel will charge a joiner fee if you've booked a room for 1 guest only. Here is an email from the Bel Aire regarding their policy:
Dear Mr. James Hunt,
Greetings from all of us at Bel-Aire Princess, Bangkok. May we inform you that Hotel’s policy for the guest’s visitor: there is an additional charge at THB 1,000 net for guest’s visitor or friend, please kindly contact our Reception for further detail on arrival. But if you booked a double room (double occupancy mention– 2 persons for booking), we will not charge for visitor. Kindly leave her I.D. Card at Reception when check in at our hotel.
Best regards,In any case, by booking a room at the Bel Aire Princess through Agoda.com you will see that the occupancy is already set to 2 guests. A 1000THB joiner fee sure can be painful otherwise. Note that the hotel requires your invited guests to leave her I.D. card with reception. This is a normal procedure for most guest friendly hotels in Thailand.
Khanin P. (Mr.)
2. Ambassador Hotel Bangkok:
|Ambassador Hotel - Superior Room|
Billed as a business hotel the Ambassador is also a great leisure hotel. It has a big swimming pool and big adequate gym for the fitness enthusiasts. It even has a squash court and not too many affordable hotels in Bangkok I know of have one of those.
The hotel is located on Sukhumvit Soi 11, an area which I like to call Club row because there are many popular bars and clubs to party near the hotel.
But let's say you don't want to go out. But you still want to have a great time at a club. Well right in the hotel's car park basement is Club Climax, a hot spot of Thai freelancers. Best to visit the club around 10pm and it closes late at around 4am (closing time can change though) which means you might find go go bar girls from Soi Cowboy and Nana flowing in to make some quick extra cash. An entrance fee to the club cost 200THB and you get a ticket for one free drink.
It's quite a nice hotel in Sukhumvit district that has been renovated in 2009. However, it's a very popular hotel so I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of rooms that have seen a lot of wear and tear. But there are over 700 hotel rooms so if you're not satisfied with your room try asking for another.
A superior room cost around 2000THB but you can get better rates for the Ambassador Hotel for around 1700THB.
3. Galleria 10 Sukhumvit Hotel (Formerly Ramada Encore)
Soi Cowboy is a 10 minute walk away with the Asoke BTS station and Sukhumvit MRT station on the way. And right by the entrance of Soi 10 is Lolita's 2, a BJ bar that is popular for for some, but not me though. I prefer heading over to Thermae bar and coffee which is directly right across Sukhumvit road.
It's the smallest hotel on this list too but it's also the coolest too. There is a rooftop swimming pool right next to a lounge/bar called Leapfrog. Matter of fact the entire hotel seems to be designed for club minded tourists with all the neon colors inside of the hotel.
Now the standard rooms are on the small side, it's around 28 square meters. But it's a very clean modern hotel room with high quality furnishings. And the room is equipped with outlets for viewing your computer on the the large flat screen television. And everything in the room is controlled by a control panel by the bed.
And the bed is one of the best I've ever slept on.
In my opinion, this hotel borders right on the 4 star range.
As a newer hotel in the Sukhumvit district and because of it's quality the rates can be expensive, reaching upwards to 3000THB per night. Even at that price rate it's actually worth it. However, you should check Agoda's rates for Galleria 10 Sukhumvit for discounts that can be as high as 30% off.
These are all great 3 star hotels in Bangkok close to a lot of nightlife and the Nana BTS station.
