Guide to Hotels Near Thailand's Red Light Districts

Whether you want to stay near the red light districts of Bangkok, Pattaya or Phuket, and you want to take a bar girl back to your hotel room, there’s something you have to check first before you do so. This is especially true if you’re following a strict budget.

You have to check whether or not the hotel has a guest friend policy. If you are not familiar with the term than you might be saying “Well aren’t all hotels supposed to be nice to their customers?”

Sure they are. At least we should all hope.

However, when someone is asking if a hotel is guest friendly or not is referring to whether or not a hotel will charge a (joiner) fee to guests for inviting prostitutes (i.e. go go bar girls, thai freelancers, massage ladies, ladyboys, gays) to their rooms, either for a one hour short time or overnight long time.

You’ve probably come across other terms on the web such as:
  • Girl or Gay or Ladyboy friendly
  • No joiner fee hotels
  • Massage friendly
Hotels near Soi Cowboy and Nana red light districts in Bangkok have the most hotels that don’t have a problem with their customers inviting prostitutes back to their rooms. Patpong red light district has the fewest.

One Common Misconception

I have come across several forums where people have mentioned that all hotels in Thailand do not have an issue with guests taking hookers to their rooms as long as they book a room for 2 guests. It is not true and very poor advice.

If you believe otherwise then I suggest booking a room for 2 at a the Amari Boulevard on Sukhumvit.  Bring a bar girl or Thai freelancer pass the reception desk and you’ll be politely stopped by hotel security.

Hopefully there are no other guests around to see what's happening.  Because it can be embarrassing when you're outed as a sex tourists. Making a big stink about the unexpected joiner fee will only make matters worst. And be ready to fork out a 1000 Baht joiner fee because that’s the Amari Boulevard’s joiner policy.

A joiner fee is an actual hotel industry term. It refers to an extra charge per person for a room that goes over the paid initial occupancy rate.

I believe the confusion arose from the fact that a vast majority of hotels in Thailand have a preset 2 person per room occupancy rule for doubles and twin rooms types. So as long as there are two people sleeping in the room overnight there is no problem right? Nope.

If a hotel wants to charge you for taking a Thai hooker to your room it is in their right to do so.

Because the 2 person occupancy rule applies to foreign tourists. It does not apply to Thai Nationals like the bar girl you're holding hands with. And of course not unless the Thai national is married to a foreigner and in that case the couple will register together during check-in at the hotel.

There is an exception to the rule though and here it is; a guest friendly hotel in Bangkok will charge a joiner fee if you go over the 2 person occupancy rule.

So even hotels that allow prostitutes will charge a fee if you break the 2 person or double occupancy rule.

Here’s a simple example at a GF Hotel:

Mr. Foreigner + Thai Bar Girl = 2 person (No joiner fee)
Mr .Foreigner + Thai Bar Girl + Thai Bar Girl = 3 person ($$ Mr. Foreigner pays a joiner)

The only hotel that allows more than 2 ladies to a room is the Nana Hotel. And I am not exactly sure what there limit is. But I do not recommend the Nana Hotel because there are many hotels near Nana Entertainment Plaza that are better, newer, a whole lot cleaner and cost around the same.

Thai Serviced Apartments

If you have an inner porn star hiding inside, just waiting to break out of you and an orgy is something you want to tick off on your check list then you might want to stay at a Thai serviced apartment.

Serviced apartment is exactly what the name implies. The service part is you get a maid to clean the room every morning and receive all the other perks a traditional hotel offers to their guests. Only difference is you check in and check out like a hotel so there is no need to sign a lease. You can stay just a few days or a few months or as long as your money runs out.

There are many very nice serviced apartments, particularly in Bangkok. Most have swimming pools and a gym. Some even have spa service and serve breakfast in the morning if you’ve booked a room that includes one. Most have a kitchenette in the room, Wi-Fi Internet and all the comforts of home.

Here are a few recommendations of serviced apartments in Bangkok:
Even if you decide to stay at serviced apartment I would recommend that you do not overdo it by inviting an entourage of bar girls for a sex Olympics. Just like a regular apartment if your neighbors start complaining then management might have a word with you.

Prostitutes Friendly Hotels Are Not Sleazy Sex Hotels

You’d be surprised about how many 4 star hotels there are in Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket that allow guests to invite bar girls and Thai freelancers to their rooms unhindered.

If you have a big bank account and can pay for an expensive room then more power to you. I’m here to say and you’ll hear it often in this blog is that you do not, and I repeat, do not have to spend a lot of money to get a very nice room in Thailand.

Many clean modern hotels near the red light districts of Bangkok is in the 1500 Baht range which is roughly $50 USD. Even hotels a little under 1500 Baht are quite good too. There are so many hotels to choose from that all the competition are keeping hotel prices very reasonable.

The best thing of all though is that you can take advantage of discounts from hotel reservation agencies, like through Agoda.com. They are a website I highly recommend for finding hotels deals in Thailand. Many of the hotels I recommend in this blog are linked to their website to give you a price reference.

Amora Neoluxe Hotel Agoda Discounts

Above is a screenshot taken from their website. It shows the room rate (as of writing) they are offering for a hotel I’ve enjoyed staying at before called the Amora Neoluxe Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 31 because it's near many oily massage parlors. This is a classic example of a hotel in a pricey neighborhood near Soi Cowboy that is highly recommended for quality and service.

As you can see they are offering a 50% off for their superior and deluxe rooms. With taxes included a superior room cost 1800 Baht per night.

Now we’ll take a look at the Amora Neoluxe’s website. I entered the same travel dates. By booking on Amora’s website directly you’ll be paying 3300 Baht. Through Agoda you’re saving 1500 Baht.

Amora Neoluxe Hotel Rates

Using hotel reservation websites like Agoda you can find really good hotel discounts even through the high season. So for example if you're looking for a 4 star beach front hotel near Chaweng, Koh Samui in December (high season) you're going to find a handful of discounts for luxury hotels by the beach.

In my experience, it’s better to reserve your hotel through an online hotel company. Another very good company to get hotel discounts in Thailand is through our back end hotel reservation agency, R24.org.

R24 and Agoda both are respectable and reliable Thailand hotel reservation companies in business for many years. And that’s the reason why I am partnered with them so you can get the best rates for hotels in Thailand. And the money you save can be spent on treating a beer or two.

I've never come across a hotel in the Sukhumvit district where Nana and Soi Cowboy red light districts provide services of Thai prostitutes for their hotel guests. They do provide in-room massage services but it'll cost more so might as well find an oily massage parlor and call up for out-call service.

So even if a hotel is in a red light district it doesn't mean that it's filled with sex deviants living in dungeon like conditions. Many hotels in Bangkok are very well maintained and run by professional hotel staff. And you will see that there are many  types of hotel guests like families, couples, business people and not just sex tourists.

Confirming a Hotels' Joiner Fee Policy

What I do to check and see whether or not a hotel in Thailand is guest friendly or not is simply by emailing the hotel and asking.

This is an actual email I sent to the President Solitaire Hotel Bangkok, as well as the reply I received:

Hello,

I'm interested in staying at President Solitaire. Will you charge a
joiners fee if I invite a lady to my room overnight? Thank you for your
assistance.

Regards,
Alex
As you can see, this is how I confirm that the President Solitaire Hotel does not charge joiner fees. There is a name on the reply email too so if there is ever a mix-up (which there shouldn't be) then at least you know who the hotel can hold accountable. And it's great to have a copy of this email in your pocket just in case. It's always good to have a confirmation in writing.

Some smaller Thai hotels will not reply when you email them. It's most likely because they cannot communicate in English or maybe they don't know how to use email. If that happens I go at it the old fashioned way by calling the hotels and asking. Those hotels I don't feel comfortable listing here because there is no written confirmation. But it doesn't matter. There are many hotels in Bangkok that are near the red light districts to stay for your vacation.

Finally, if you want to know which hotels in Nana or Soi Cowboy is the best guest friendly hotels my answer is that there are many. And you'll find many reviews here on this blog. You will also find out which hotels in Pattaya, Phuket and even Hua Hin are girl friendly to round out your holiday in Thailand.

There are also a lot of nice hotels near Bangkok's soapy massage parlors too in Huay Kwang. Huay Kwang is only 3 stops away to Sukhumvit on the MRT subway train so it's not far at all. I highly recommend Hip Hotel if you need a budget and girl friendly hotel near the soapies.

So I hope I helped clear up any confusion about hotels in Thailand, particularly about joiner fees. And if you find my reviews useful, or if you just want to say hello, please drop a comment!
